The Polar Express

Literally you get on the train, and you feel Christmas(even if its not 25th of December) and you get to meet Santa Claus. It is located in Williams, Az, half an hour west of Flagstaff. It’s a small unique town, very authentic, with its own essence, as if time didn’t pass through here, almost as if you can still arrive on a horse to the bar and being a lumberjack it’s the go to profession. Once you arrive to the station, as if you were on a movie, the noise of the train brings you the tracks, and all the families get together. Once inside, the story begins, told by these completely immerse characters, chocolate and cookies are served and the finale stop its Santa’s little shop. By this time you forget there is a world outside of the train and out of nowhere the Big Red boy arrives.

Saying hi to Santa Claus and even getting a photo with him makes the whole experience worth it.

Literalmente es subirte al tren, sentir que es Navidad (¡aunque no sea!) y conocer a Santa Claus. Esta ubicado en Williams, Arizona, a media hora al Oeste de Flagstaff. Es un pequeño pueblo único, auténtico, se siente como si el tiempo no hubiera pasado aquí, como si aun pudieras llegar a caballo a la cantina o que si ser leñador es la profesión principal. Llegar a la estación de tren, justo cual película, escuchar al tren llegar a distancia y subir con la familia dividido en vagones. Una vez arriba, la historia inicia, contada por los participantes completamente entrados en sus personajes, servidas por chocolate y galletas hasta llegar al pueblo del gordito rojo. Es una inmersión completa a la experiencia y terminas pudiendo conocer al mero mero y hasta saludarlo.

Toparla con Santa Claus, hace que valga toda la pena de subirse al tren.

Pioneer Village Trading Post

Not sure why I didn’t arrive on a horse, but I should have and if you can do so, cause the aspect, atmosphere and everything that involves this places just shouts for cowboys , authenticity and western movies.

It a massive place ran by two old timers than can size you up with one simple look. This couple, this marriage, doesn’t have time for chit-chat, long stories or “just looking around” type of people; they have seen it all, and there’s a lot of traffic and tourist coming in.

Huge place filled with antiques, western jewelry, furniture and almost every weapon I wanted as a kid. Every time I pass by Payson it’s a must, just remember to bring your cash and a horse if possible.

Disclaimer, you are walking out of the place with more than 1 thing, I guarantee it.

No estoy seguro porque no llegue en caballo, pero chingadamadre debí hacerlo, este lugar, su forma, apariencia y atmosfera simplemente te devuelve al pasado y te hace recordar a los vaqueros y películas del viejo oeste.

Es un lugar gigante que lo manejan dos viejos que con una mirada ya saben que traes. Esta pareja, un matrimonio, no tienen tiempo para conversaciones, historias largas o para la gente que nomas vino a ver. Ya lo vieron todo, ya se la saben todas, demasiada gente desfila por su tienda, compras o te vas.

Sumamente grande, lleno de antigüedades, joyería del viejo oeste, muebles y cada maldita arma que quería de morrito. Cada que paso por Payson me detengo, sin duda alguna, solo recuerden de traer efectivo y tal vez un caballo de ser posible.

Sin duda salen con más de un producto, se los prometo.

Arcosanti

Arcosanti is a compact city, begun in 1970 and continues to be developed by anyone who has a heart and will to stay. Comes from the incredible mind of Paolo Soleri, to save resources and improve quality of life for all.

Located 60 miles north of central Phoenix, once you step in a different vibe (and weather) hits you. You belong to these futuristic ruins, they welcome you so you can walk through them, explore, contemplate the views and even almost decide to move in.

Arcosanti holds multiple workshops, concerts, exhibitions and the greatest bells in the entire world. Cosanti bells are something that you can’t walk away from, each with a unique sound and made just there.

6 weeks comprehends the camp to stay inside these walls and learn every trade that constitutes Arcosanti, but since I spend so much time over there, haven’t found the need to stay overnight, except for one weekend a year. This is an adventure that can only be surpassed by their annual musical experience FORM.

This is a place for music, art, ideas, architecture and wellness; an urban laboratory and the best kept secret of Arizona.

Arcosanti es una ciudadela, iniciada en 1970 y que hoy continua siendo desarrollada por el que tiene corazón y deseo de quedarse. Proviene de la increíble mente de Paolo Soleri, para generar recursos renovables y aumenta la calidad de vida de todos.

La podemos encontrar a 60 millas al norte de Phoenix, pero una vez que llegan su vibra te rodea por completo. Uno se siente identificado con estas ruinas futuristicas, te atraen y dan la bienvenida para ser exploradas, contempladas y casi convencerte de que te quedes a vivir con ellas.

Arcosanti mantiene varios talleres, conciertos y exhibiciones a lo largo del año, pero su gran atracción son las campanas. Las campanas Cosanti son únicas, quieres tocarlas todas y comparar su sonido porque cada una tiene un sonido específico y único.

6 semanas toma el campamento de inmersión para aprender todo lo que conlleva el mantenimiento y procesos de esta ciudadela. Voy tanto de visita que no he tenido la necesidad de quedarme a dormir aun, excepto por un fin de semana al año. FORM, su festival de música, es una experiencia que no puede ser igualada por nada en este país, es privado, personal, extrasensorial y único.

Este es un lugar para la música, el arte, las ideas, la arquitectura y el bienestar personal; un laboratorio urbano como el mejor secreto de Arizona.

The Van Buren

Had the fortune to be called by Phoenix, and just some months later the music scene in the city expanded and grew, hard, immensely hard. The Van Buren came to live on August 2017, and I was there to feel its power.

They pretty much have a concert every day; it can hold up to 1,800 persons, you have to be one of them. A concert for every taste and person, a beer or the house margarita for any occasion, this joint, this place, this venue, this is it.

The building came from a historic vintage auto-dealership to become a movement. Come in, rub the head of our beloved president, get as close as the stage as possible, jump, dance and sing to your favorite songs and at the end, use the #thevanburen.

Tuve la fortuna de ser llamado por la ciudad de Phoenix, y solo unos pocos meses después la escena de esta ciudad creció, cabronamente.  En Agosto del 2017, The Van Buren nació y estuve ahí para presenciar todo su poder.

Prácticamente tiene un concierto cada día, le caben 1,800 personas y sin duda tienen que ser uno de ellas. Hay conciertos para todos los gustos y sabores, una cerveza fría o la margarita de la casa para cada ocasión, este lugar, este establecimiento, este maldito edificio, lo es todo.

El edificio era una antigua agencia de carros, pero se a convertido en todo un movimiento. Entra, toca la cabeza de nuestro 8vo presidente, llega tan cerca como puedas al escenario, brinca, baila y canta tus canciones favoritas hasta no poder mas y siempre utiliza el #thevanburen.

Lumberyard Brewing

When you are at 3 degrees in the middle of a storm, what do you look for? Coffee? Hot chocolate? I find refuge and a cold beer, and some of the best this mountain town can offer at Lumberyard Brewery.

Quickly you realize this a place full of locals and their families, but you can see first timers that are craving one of their burgers and beers. Running from cold, walking through snow and ice, we found this beautiful place that displays their tank fermenters, making the craving for a beer even bigger.

They have nationally prized beers, no one brags about it, but I think is important for all of us to know it. I specially recommend the “Raihead Red”, even if my friends think it’s a little bit strong. This one gets its flavor by balancing crystal and caramel malts.

Go immediately, next time you hit the mountain, summer or winter, because the beer will always be cold. Don’t forget to take a picture at the gorgeous mural behind the building, project directors and artists R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar are the core of Mural Mice and brought a keen eye to the sprawling story of Route 66.

Cuando estas a 3 grados en medio de una tormenta de nieve, que es lo que buscas? Café, chocolate caliente? Yo voy por una cerveza, y de la mejor que hay debajo de la montaña es en Lumberyard Brewery.

Rápidamente te das cuenta de que es un lugar para los locales y familias, pero con un lugar para los buscadores de una buena hamburguesa y cerveza fría. Corriendo del frio, caminando entre nieve y hielo, nos encontramos con este hermoso lugar. Al fondo se pueden ver los fermentadores esperando que sean utilizadas.

Tienen cervezas premiadas a nivel nacional, nadie te lo dice, pero creo que deberíamos saberlo. No pueden perderse la  “Railhead Red” , aunque mis amigos dicen que esta algo fuerte, pero es debido a su perfecto balance de maltas claras y acarameladas.

Vayan de inmediato, con frio o calor, que la cerveza siempre estará a una perfecta temperatura. Y no olviden tomarse una foto en el hermoso mural en la parte trasera del edificio, creado por R.E. Wall y Margaret Dewar que con los líderes de Mural Mice y le han traído color a la historia de la Ruta 66.

Chihuaha Seafood

If there is a line and no place to sit, you want to eat there.

Small place, with a blue roof that from the first look you say, meh, not sure if I should check it out. Kid, go in, as fast as you can cause Chihuahua SF has the best and most authentic Mexican cuisine in this fucking valley. Found it cause I live a couple minutes away from it, saw a “taka-taka”(trio) band come in and thought, mhm this place may just be what I was missing on my hangover Sundays.

Listen and listen well, get the “camarones ahogados agasajados” there is no real translation for it, the best aguachile in the state, but gotta be careful, spicy AF. You can catch me eating there very Saturday morning, need to power up.

Si hay fila y ninguna mesa libre, ahí es donde quieres comer.

Un pequeño lugar con techo azul para que te no pierdas; al principio dije que no me llamaba mucho la atención por su apariencia, pero cabron, tienes que ir. Ve ya, ahorita, tan rápido como puedas que sinceramente Chihuahua SF tiene la mejor y mas autentica comida mexicana en todo este valle.

Lo encontré por que vivo por la zona y vi que unos taka-taka iban entrando, ahora paso cada día de cruda ahí, sin falta.

Créeme, sin dudas ni pretextos, los camarones ahogados agasajados son el mejor aguachile que probaras en tu vida, no hay otro así en todo Arizona. Pero jamás te atrevas a pedir extra salsa, vas a llorar. Pueden encontrarme comiendo ahí cada sábado por las mañanas, sin falta.

Herbs & Rye

In the middle of Las Vegas, I wanted to feel local, didn’t wanna hit the strip or the casinos, and just needed a good whisky and soundtrack worth my sips. By eavesdropping on some conversations, some guys said that the best steak was to be found at Herbs and Rye, they didn’t lie.

The soundtrack is unbeatable, jazz and blues at the perfect decibel to fill out the space in between conversations and secrets. It is a step back into time, offering some of the world’s greatest classic cocktails prepared in their original state and method of preparation.

Handcrafted drinks based on the most popular eras of our time, an Italian atmosphere, just as if you were sitting with ¨La Familia¨ and the Godfather. Here, the focus is on the classics and the stories behind them.

Wasn’t it love as soon as we knew each other properly? Yes it was Herbs and Rye, yes it was.

En medio de Las Vegas, quería sentirme como un local, pero sin ir a los antros o casinos, solo buscaba un buen whisky y la música perfecta que lo acompañara. A través de conversaciones ajenas, alguien menciono que el mejor filete seria encontrado en Herbs & Rye, no mintieron.

La música de fondo es irremplazable, jazz y blues que se sintonizan perfectamente con el espacio entre conversaciones y secretos. Es como dar un paso atrás en el tiempo, ofrecen los clásicos preparados con su metodología original.

Los mejores tragos de cada era, una atmosfera italiana, justo como si Tony Soprano estuviera sentado junto a ti. El secreto aquí es concentrarse en los clásicos y las historias detrás de ellos.

No fue amor justo cuando nos conocimos? SI que lo fue Herbs & Rye, si que lo fue.

Stinkweeds

The first time I came to Phoenix, somehow I ended up being drag by unnatural forces into Central and Downtown area. By the fortune of the Gods, I saw this place, Stinkweeds, and ever since then, life has been a bit better.

Don’t try to go in by the front door(closed forever), you gotta go around, and that means you need to pass the unbearable traffic created by young blond kids trying to get a “insert fruity drink’s name here” from Dutch Bros(No hate to DB).

Once inside, ask which record is playing right now, I bet you is a great one. Look around, act like a local and get yourself your next album. This ain’t Zia, needless to say, everyone working here has a genuine love of music, and they pride themselves on helping customers find music they love.

By the way, every once in a while they host small concerts, right there, where no more than 30 people can fit, but lord, it does sound better than any other venue.

Started at 19, Kimber has been one of the coolest cats that the desert can offer. Over 27 years now, the store has been relocated 4 times, finding its best known place by Central & Camelback. You may find her in the store on Sundays, ask her for an album recommendation, is a must.

La primera vez que llegue a Phoenix, de alguna manera termine, gracias a fuerzas sobrenaturales a las áreas de Central y Downtown. Gracias a la fortuna de los dioses, vi este lugar, Stinkweeds, y desde entonces, mi vida es un poco mejor.

No intenten llegarle por la puerta principal (está cerrada por siempre), tienen que ir a la parte de atrás, dándole la vuelta. Eso significa que tienen que cruzar el maldito “trafico” creado por los millenials que necesitan un trago frutal de Dutch Bros(No tenemos pedos con DB).

Ya que entran, luego luego se siente la vibra y el efecto de la mejor tienda de discos de la ciudad. Pregunta que disco están tocando, te apuesto que es fantástico. Checa el espacio, actúa como si fueras un local y compra tu siguiente record. Esto no es Zia, sin tener que mencionarlo, cada persona que trabaja aquí tiene un genuino amor por la música y se enorgullecen de poder ayudarte a encontrar música que ellos y tu amaran.

Por cierto, cada dos tres semanas tienen un concierto, justo ahí, donde no cabemos pero donde la música suena mejor que en cualquier otro venue.

A los 19, Kimber ya era una de las personas mas cabronas que el desierto nos ha dado. Después de 27 años, la tienda se a relocado 4 veces, hasta encontrar su mejor hogar en Central & Camelback. Puedes encontrarla atendiendo la tienda los domingos, pídele una recomendación, nunca se equivoca.
